St. Patrick

St. Patrick comes to Ireland bringing the Christian faith with him.

Religion

1692 - 1829

New laws don't allow Catholics to vote, own land, and practice their religion. These laws stay in practice until 1829.

Act of Union

1800

Ireland becomes part of the United Kingdom in the Act of Union signing

Potato Blight

1845 - 1849

A disease called potato blight infects two-thirds of the potatoes in Ireland. This makes the potatoes unable to eat. This potato blight ends in 1849 leaving almost one million people dead from starvation.

Irish war of independence

1919 - 1921

Ireland fights a war of independence against Britain. Ending in the Anglo Irish Treaty. Ireland was then a free state within Britain.

Ireland is a free state and joins the League of Nations.

The southern 26 countries of Ireland are free from the British empire. They name themselves the Irish Republic.

Bloody Sunday

1972

British troops arrive in ireland and kill 13 pedestrians in a peaceful march. After this incident Dublin bruned down their British embassy.

President

1990

Mary Robinson becomes the first female president of Ireland.

1995

Marks the time in which Ireland's great economy growth which last until 2007.

Pound, Punt

2002

Europe replaces the Irish Pound, or Punt as Ireland's official money.

Language

2005 - 2006

The Irish government starts a 20- year plan making Ireland a two language speaking country where everyone speaks english and Irish.
