Joe's mother dies of cancer. His father (Harry Rantz) remarie's a lady named Thula
In the summer of 1924. Joe's stepmother demands that Joe leaves the house at the age of 15 and has to live by himself and buy or find his own food.

Joe returns home from school to find his family packed up and ready to move. Joe is left alone once again.
Joe graduates high school. Then works for a year to save money. He then moves to seattle and enrolls in the University of Washington.
After weeks of Grueling tryouts Joe finally got a spot on the freshman rowing team at Washington University.
The freshman team win the national Championships in Poughkeepsie, New York, by five boat lengths.
Coach Ulbrickson announces the rowing teams new goal. To represent the U.S. in the 1936 Olympics.
Joe and his crew have been training very hard for the Olympics and they come home with gold, winning the 1936 Olympics.
