The U-2 incident was when an America plane was shot down by the Soviet Union. The pilot, F. Gary Powers, was one a mission to collect Soviet intelligence data. The Soviet Union wanted America to apologize, stop flying over Soviet territory and to punish those who did. America agreed to only part of it and Powers was sentenced to 10 years of prison by the Soviet Union. This event caused tensions between the United States and Soviet Union to rise because it was the first time the Soviets were holding an American prisoner.
