Prisoners were leased to companies for work in the late 1800's. This was used to undermine the union. After awhile the people that worked for the companies got tired of working with the prisoners and started a war against The State of Tennessee in Coal Creek. This war ended in 1891 and set the pathway for Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary being established.
Biltmore was Established
George Vanderbilt, grandson of the wealthy Cornelius Vanderbilt, opened the Biltmore mansion in 1895 on Christmas Eve. The mansion holds four acres of floor space, 35 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms, and 65 fireplaces.
Fraterville Mine Disaster
A coal mine exploded in Fraterville, TN. The cause of the explosion was not discovered but many believe it was caused from a build up of methane gas. The Fraterville community lost every adult male except for three. It turned out that it was the worst mining disaster in Tennessee history.
Smoky Mountain National Park
Calvin Coolidge started the national park system. The Smoky Mountain National Park was apart of the plan to help fight against unemployment and the great depression.
Tennessee Valley Authority
Created by Franklin D Roosevelt in 1933. Was created to battle the problems of flooding, lack of energy, and economic development. FDR included TVA in his New Deal to hopefully get the United States out of the great depression.
Twelve brave students walked down Foley Hill from the Green McAdoo school to Clinton High School to be the first students to desegregate the white and black population in Anderson County, TN.
War on Poverty
President Lyndon Johnson declared a war on poverty. This started the social security, food stamps, head start, and other things. These things were important to the Appalachian area because of the poverty that strangled the Appalachian area. Many of the things that were implemented in the war on poverty are still alive today and many people in the Appalachian area benefit from those programs.
The Worlds Fair
In May of 1982 Knoxville, TN welcomed people from all over the world to the Worlds Fair. The Worlds Fair Park was constructed for many nations to come and show off their achievements. This lasted until October and then was closed but left behind what we know as the "Worlds Fair Park".
Dollywood is Established
An amusement park was opened by the name "Dollywood" in 1986 after being partially bought by Dolly Parton. Dolly was from this area and wanted to give back to her community so she found a way to make jobs for nearly 4,000 people. This place was called other things before Dollywood and was originally opened in 1961
The Tennessee Aquarium
Tennessee's state aquarium opened to the public in 1992. It was chosen to be placed in Chattanooga, TN rather than the capital of Tennessee which is Nashville, TN. The aquarium houses more than 12,000 animals.
