Hieroglyphs were used by Egyptians as early as 3000 BC. Hieroglyphs consist over 1000 symbols and many drawings. Egyptians specifically used hieroglyphs to tell stories, decorate temple walls, and show worship to gods. Egyptians devoted their daily lives to assuring the pharaoh (“all gods on earth”) is both respected and feared. When pharaohs die, they get buried in large temples surrounded in hieroglyphs that support the entrance into the ‘Valley of Kings’.
Antient Egyptians and Semitic individuals found that pictograms, such as the hieroglyphs, were limited in distance. They based the first extensive alphabet of the idea of hieroglyphs but created their own symbols approximately between 1800-1900 BC. The alphabet quickly became a trend and was swiftly adapted into neighboring cities and countries. The first official alphabet was developed by the Phoenicians about 700 years later.
A German man, Johannes Gutenberg, invented the printing press in 1440. This innovation caused a revolutionary printing dynasty. The printing press allowed authors and journalist to produce many copies of books, newspaper, and allowed new/messages to be spread at a fast rate. Newspapers, first established in 1690, permitted those living across the country to be notified on political and social events occurring.
Many hundred years after the printing press was developed, the prototype of the typewriter was designed. The development of printing press assisted William Austin Burt’s inspiration to form this advancement in Detroit (1829). It wasn’t until in 1897 when the official typewriter was produced by Christopher Latham Sholes of Milwaukee, Carlos Glidden, and Samuel W. Soule established their version of the typewriter.
A few decades after the internet was successfully developed and stable, Ray Tomlinson, invited an electronic messaging platform to know as email through a network called ARPANET. Tomlinson was inspired to create a form of digital communication that would be simple and practical to use. Email soon became one of the most used form of communication in the late 1900’s. The first every email was sent from computer to computer on December 10th, 1971.
Facebook, an online messaging and photography platform was a created in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg. Facebook was first launched in Cambridge, Massachusetts. This platform began as a leisure app for Harvard Students to rate the attractiveness of other students and was called Facemash. Facebook became successful due to the trends traveling from university across the United States.
Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, officially announced the development of the 15” MacBook at a Macworld Conference in 2006. Later, the 17” model was released. The Macworld conference is held in California each year, but majority of apple product are built in China. The development of the MacBook allowed messages to be sent digitally with ease. The first email received from space was sent from the Mac portable (MacBook).
In early 2006, twitter rapidly became a desired form of communication. Twitter, developed by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams, was officially launched in San Francisco July that same year. The first tweet that was ever posted stated “just setting up my twttr.” was posted by Jack Dorsey on March 21st, 2006. In 2012, users shared over 340 million tweets average per day. Jack Dorsey, one of the creators, was inspired to be able to use his cellphone to send messages and distribute it to all his friends. Twitter is of social media form that allows individuals to post short “tweets” on the feed. Currently, consumers use twitter a place to express and share opinions on global news.
Approximately 30 years after Apple was founded, apple announced that they would be releasing a hand held device that supported third-party applications. The first iPhone was official released on June 29th, 2007 in California. Steve jobs, the inventor of the iPhone, was the co-founder of apple and wanted a touch screen phone that permitted texting and calling. Currently iPhones get used for many messaging and communication mediums, for example; iMessage, social media, and email.
Instagram was originally a medium that allowed users to check-in with where they are on their mobile devices and was named Burbn. Instagram was officially launched on October 6th, 2010 and was developed by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger in San Francisco. After it was launched, it evolved to a photography app. Within 2 weeks of the app establishment, Kevin was able obtain $500 000, he later quit his job. In 2012, Instagram was bought by Facebook and is one of the most successful messaging/social media programs.
