the Meeting of the Estates General
May 5, 1789 - June 17, 1789
consisted of a meeting of three estates- nobility, clergy and commoners. this sparked the beginning of the French Revolution.
the tennis court oath
June 20th, 1789 - 1791
Members of the third estate vowed "not to separate and to resemble wherever circumstances require". the revolutionary act conveyed the idea that political authority came from the people not the monarchy
the storming of Bastille
July 14, 1789
The storming of Bastille occurred when a state prison in Paris was attacked by an angry mob. the prison had become a symbol of the monarchs dictatorial rule. This became one of the defining moments of the revolution as we know it.
The reign of Terror
september 5, 1793 - july 28, 1794
A dark and violent period during the Revolution also known as the "terror" of about 11 months where many were executed and arrested for being suspected as "disloyal"
Napoleon's Empire collapses
April 11 1814
Britain soon gained control of all sea ports and this allowed Britain to have control no other country had. this lead to others leaving to join Great Britain leading to the fall of Napoleon and his empire.
