In the year 1789 King Louis XVI called for a meeting with the Estates General. The Meeting was called because of the financial crisis the French government was in. The Estates General talk about many issues such as voting which they talked about for a while. After arguing about voting for a while the Third Estate finally declared itself a National Assembly and decided to make their own laws.
The Tennis Court Oath
1789 - 1791
After the National Assembly was formed King Louis XVI didn’t like it so he decided to close down the building in which they were meeting. So the assembly members decided to meet a the local tennis court where they made an oath to keep meeting until the king acknowledged them as a government body.
The Storming of the Bastille
July 14, 1789
The Third Estates people were mad with the king because they had been asking for more of a say in the government but he kept ignoring him. So they went and stormed the Bastille in order to get gunpowder. They fought until the jails leader surrendered and they seized the jail and the gunpowder.
The Rise of Napoleon and creation of an Empire
1793 - 1799
Napoleon came during the French Revolution and fought with the Jacobins. The French felt that his leadership was good so they made him a military commander. Then he turned their military around and defeated the Austrians. After in 1799 he became the dictator of France.
The Reign of Terror
September 5, 1793 - July 27, 1794
This period was a time of violence during the French Revolution. During this time radicals took over the government, and arrested and executed anyone who wasn’t loyal to their revolution.
Napoleon’s Empire collapses
1812 - 1815
First Napoleon attempted to invade Russia which didn’t turn out as he suspected. Many soldiers died on the way and died from lack of supplies. Then after returning from the invasion the rest of Europe force he into exile. Then he tried to return but was defeated in the battle of Waterloo.
The Congress of Vienna
1814 - 1815
This meeting was called by the European powers after Napoleons downfall in order to maintain peace and stability.
