Napoleon climbed the ranks of the French military. He did this during the French Revolution.
Tennis Court Oath
June 20, 1789
The 3rd estate were locked out of a town building by the higher estates to be stopped from having a meeting. The found another building down the street which was a tennis court. They met there and vowed not to separate until a constitution was developed.
Storming of the Bastille
July 14, 1789
Bastille ( a prison) held political prisoners that were jailed by the royal government of Louis XVI. They feared that they would be attacked by the royal army. They came prepared with gunpowder and ammunition and stormed into the prison.
Reign of Terror
September 5, 1793 - July 28, 1794
Robespierre was in control and started his Reign of Terror. There was terror and there were executions against all. About 40,000 people were killed during this time. Marie Antoinette was guillotined. At the end of 1974 Robespierre was arrested.
The Meeting of the Estates General
May 5, 1798
This was an assembly that was composed of the three estates, the clergy, nobility and commoners. They were going to decide on changing the taxes because they were having financial problems.
Napoleon’s Empire Collapses
April 1814 - April 1, 1814
Britain was defeating the empire. His army was destroyed which was seen as a weakness from other countries. These other countries joined Great Britain to destroy the empire. Then, he surrendered and gave of the throne which ended his empire.
The Congress of Vienna
November 1814 - June 1815
After Napoleon’s downfall, this conference was called to create a balance between the European powers. They did this to prevent future wars from happening and to keep and maintain peace and stability in Europe.
