Equestrian eventing first appeared in the Olympics. There were three individual competitions in dressage, eventing and show jumping. The competition was held over five days. The first day was endurance ride to be completed in 4 hours, and include a 5 km, 12-obstacle cours to be completed in 15 minutes. The second day was a rest day. The third day was a 3500m steeplechase over 10 obstacles to be completed in 5 minutes and 50 seconds. The fourth was the show jumping, 15 obstacle course with a maximum jump height of 1.3metes and 3 meters wide. The final day held the dressage test. All competitors were all military officers, men, in uniform. All athlete were required to be amateurs.
