The Meeting of the Estates General was a meeting of the three estates. The estate someone was in would determine things like their rights, obligations, and status.
The Tennis Court Oath
June 20, 1789
During the Estate General, the estates moved to a nearby tennis court after being locked out and took an oath not to separate until something was passed. This is known now as the Tennis Court Oath.
The Storming of the Bastille
July 14, 1789
Bastille, a royal fortress that came to symbolize the tyranny of the Bourbon monarchs, was stormed. Launay and his men were taken into custody, cannons and gunpowder were seized, and 7 prisoners were freed.
The Reign of Terror
September 5, 1793 - July 27, 1794
The government began to trying to find and eliminate suspected enemies. Over 300,000 were arrested, many were executed, and around 10,000 died in prison without ever being tried.
Rise of Napoleon and Creation of an Empire
1799 - 1800
After coming back from Egypt, Napoleon was welcomed in France. He overthrew the Directory and established the Consulate with the help of his army. By 1800, he was the First Consul of France and had almost complete power.
Congress of Vienna
1814 - 1815
The European leader were divided into Liberals and Conservatives. They held a series of meetings together that are known as the Congress of Vienna.
Napoleon's Empire Collapses
After a series of lost wars and events, Napoleon was forced to abdicate his throne. He was exiled to a small island by the Treaty of Fontainebleau.
