Many plagues were extremely common during this time. There was not much information known about health and the prevention of disease so many people speculated that those who fell ill to smallpox, cholera, etc. did so due to being spiritually inept.
First mental hospital established
Jon Snow and the Broad Street pump
Jon Snow was curious about the cause of massive Cholera outbreaks. Against officials advising, he shut off the water supply at the Broad street pump and measured the incidence of the disease burden in the corresponding areas. Thankfully, this prevented further spread of the disease in this area and it became clear that it was a sanitation issue.
Sanitation Awareness begins
Cities such as London and New York began to be aware that the accumulation of human waste and filth in the streets may be the cause of the spread of these epidemics. These issues were finally viewed as a community problem versus an individual problem.
Development of analytical data
1930 - 1939
Researchers and scientists developed effective ways to measure disease burden and how to prevent it. The Framington Heart Study was one of the first studies of a population over an extended period of time.
CDC recommends that children be vaccinated in order to protect against chicken pox, measles, mumps, and rubella, and other vaccine preventable diseases. The disease burden decreased significantly after this policy was implemented.
