Battle of Dien Bien Phu. France invaded Vietnam, which had become communist, in the hopes of retaking it as a colony. Led to French defeat and the Geneva Accords.
Geneva Accords were signed. This split Vietnam in half. South Vietnam was democratic and North Vietnam was communist.
President Jacobo Arbenz is forced to resign after revolutionary reforms aided by the US. The US thought that Guatemala was going to become communist.
The US sent American-trained Cubans into Cuba in an attempt to overthrow Fidel Castro. This plan backfired and resulted in more than 100 casualties.
American U-2 spy plane captured photos of Soviet missiles being assembled in Cuba. These missiles were just 90 miles south of Florida.
Tense standoff between the US and USSR just outside of Cuba.
An agreement between the USSR and the US was reached. The USSR would remove the missiles from Cuba as long as the US promised not to invade Cuba.
Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. A US ship announced that they had been attacked. This announcement turned out to be false but it still resulted in the US’s full involvement in the Vietnam War.
Operation Rolling Thunder. The US begins the first stages of war with Vietnam. They begin to drop bombs on North Vietnam.
South Vietnam falls to North Vietnam and becomes communist. The US failed.
