Turner and about seventy other people killed about sixty whit people. fifty five slaves including turner were accused and killed for their role in the murder. Nat Turner's uprising was the bloodiest of them all. After that education and assembly was illegal.
The Wilmot Proviso
1846 - 1850
It was a piece of legislation that made it illegal to own slaves in America owned land. The piece failed.
The compromise of 1850
This made California a free state. By doing this it strengthened the fugitive slave act.
Uncle Tom's Cabin
It was a very popular book. It made many people think about slavery as a problem instead of a solution. It made the slavery problem start leaning towards the Northern states.
1854 - 1859
Many people settled into Kansas to try to sway the possibilities of it being a slave or a free state. John Brown made violence in Kansas by killing slavery supporters. The violence was gone but more than 50 settlers died.
Dred Scott v. Sanford
He was a Virginia slave who tried to sue for his freedom. The court said that he had no legal rights because he was a piece of property.The Dred Scott Decision threatened to entirely recast the political landscape that had thus far managed to prevent civil war.
He faced Abraham Lincoln for his seat in the senate. They debated the most controversial issue: slavery. Douglas won the senate race, made Lincoln more likely to be president.
John Brown's raid
He supported violence against the South to end slavery. He led a raid on Harper's Ferry. He tried to confiscate weapons. He was tried for treason.
Abraham Lincoln's election
He struck fear into many southerners because he was president and supported anti slavery.
