July 2001 - August 2004
I begin scribbling and coloring with crayons
Begin pretend reading to baby dolls and siblings
Beginning to talk in sentences
I had a lot of words by this point and was beginning to put them into sentences most of the time.
Scribbles become drawings
What used to look like scribbles are now beginning to look more like real drawings and sometimes are labeled with letter like shapes.
Begin learning Alphabet
I began learning the alphabet at around 4, however I absolutely hated it and often refused to do it correctly for anyone but myself.
Experiment with Rhyming
Around the age of 5 I became obsessed with rhyming. Often I would rhyme words until it ended with my siblings laughing because my rhyming had started with appropriate word and ended with one that was not. These laughs from my siblings usually occurred when the word I was trying to rhyme with was " donald duck".

Letter Name- Alphabetic Stage
September 2004 - August 2005
I can write my own name by the first few weeks of kindergarten
Know letters and Sounds
Can look at a letter and say the sound associated with it.
Write with invented spelling
I begin to write words that may at first appear to be a jumble of random letters but spelling may is likely stemming from sound of letter names.
Read First word
This was a day i actually remember clearly. i went inside to get ice and read the word Ice on the refrigerator. It was like everything clicked and I just wanted to see how many words I could read.
Read Simple Books
In the beginning of 1st grade, I begin reading simple and predictable patterned books. For example I began reading the BOB books.
In 1st grade I develop the ability to write stories and often free write in my yellow writing journal in Mrs. Tipton's class. I begin loving to write and can accurately spell most high frequency words.
Correctly Spell CVC and CVCe Words
Can correctly spell most obvious patterned words, while I know this skill developed sometime in the 1st to 2nd grade range, Im not sure exactly when it was.
Put E at the end of all words
Learn about the silent E and begin putting it at the end of most words until I begin to understand it a bit more. My 1st grade journal is great proof of when I learned this rule

2006 - June 2007
Begin to Read Silently
I begin to read silently to myself near the end of 1st grade beginning of second.
Read Fluently with Expression (chapter books)
I begin to become more confident in my reading abilities and can read aloud and silently with great fluency and use of expression. Can read simple chapter books like Charlottes Web
Can Edit Papers
Can edit and revise papers with ease. Can look back at lengthy writing and correct capitalization and simple mechanical errors.
Syllables and Affixes Stage
2008 - 2010
I would say this stage began around 4th/3rd grade for me
Able to spell almost all single syllable words correctly
Single syllables word spelling are not tricky anymore. However, at this point I am still figuring out the spelling of two syllable words which can sometimes be a little tricky for me.
Begin to Understand Affixes and Suffixes
I begin using these as strategies to decipher word meaning.
Read Faster Silently
I enjoy reading at this point and so on my own. Often reading through short and long chapter books with ease.
Write Different Genres
In 4th grade we did a week long thing called "camp write a long" which we basically explored all aspects of writing. Including genres and the writing process as a whole.
Begin Taking Notes
Start learning how to take notes and summarize stories.
Begin responding to reading more critically through things such as socratic seminars in sixth grade.
2011 - Present
In 6th grade I begin to take notes on readings specifically the book The Outsiders. In class we would take notes in a blue book and do several different aspects of literary analysis. Such as character maps, and plot maps.
Begin taking place in socratic seminars analyzing poems in 7th grade.
Learn to Annotate Poems
Learned how to find the deeper meaning of poems and how to understand the meaning.
Write Critical Responses to a Reading
Learn to connect device (diction, syntax, imagery) to the meaning of the reading and write about how the author conveys their meaning through their writing. I did this through a form Calle CD2M
Analyze Readings From The Transcendentalism Era
Read numerous passages by Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson.
Write Critical and Sophisticated Responses to Novels
2016 - 2018
At this time I begin writing formal analysis. Usually around 6-7 pages long and analyze books such as The Catcher In The Rye, and The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
Learn To Teach Literacy
2018 - Present
Begin learning how to teach literacy and the way we develop as literate beings.
