Truman Doctrine

March 12, 1947

In a speech Truman declares that the U.S. will take an active role in the civil wars in both Greece and Turkey because it is "the policy of the United States to support free people who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures." This Doctrine eventually became the American Cold War Policy throughout Europe and the rest of the world.

Berlin Blockade and Airlift

The Berlin Blockade and Airlift was an attempt by the Soviet Union to force the Western Allied powers out of West Berlin. The action was a response to the uniting of France's, England's, and America's different occupation zones into a single economic unit.
