There was three estates: the first estate, second estate, third estate. The first estate consisted of the clergy and approximately 130,000 in population. The second estate were the nobles and were 350,000 in population. the third estate was mostly commoners and had 80% of the population. The king called a meeting to seek advice on the problems that France had. The third estate wanted to abolish tax exemptions of the clergy and the nobles. The third estate had the majority but the king overruled and each estate only had one vote. The third estate called themselves a national Assembly.
