Chinese prospectors came to Australia for the gold rush in search of gold.
In late 1854, the first Chinese lodging houses were created in Little Bourke Street and Celestial Avenue (off Little Bourke Street).
The Zoo was opened on 6 October 1862 at the Royal Park site. Before this, animals were housed at the botanical gardens in Melbourne.
Garden and Picnic Areas were developed when more exotic animals were brought in by the zoo.
