In January 532, emperor Justinian and his wife Theodora were attending the chariot races where people often fought between who was the better team the blues of the greens. Even though this was normal for the villagers, the emperor didn't like this so when he saw some people fighting he arrested some of them. However the villagers disagreed with the emperors actions and told him this was normal in these races and part of the fun. but still, the emperor didn't let them go. because of this, the people started to destroy parts of the city and started a riot that lasted a week. The emperor was kind of a coward so he tried to escape and never come back but, his wife Theodora, convinced him to stay and end the riot. In the end the emperor ended the revolt. He let the prisoners go free. and decided to fix up the city too since it was basically in flames and destroyed. He built bridges, hospitals, orphanages, parks, roads, and cathedrals. One of the cathedrals he built was the Hagia Sophia. It held the title of the largest cathedral in the world for some time.
