In 1812 Napoleon led a massive army in Russia, the Russians had a strategy to retreat whenever Napoleons forces tried to attack. While Napoleons army was retreating, the Russians attacked and killed most of their troops. At the same time the french were in the peninsular war and lost. In 1813 the french were defeated in the battle of Leipzig, and in 1814 coalition forces captured Paris. In 1816 Napoleon was exiled to Elba but a year after returned with more than 1000 supporters to the french mainland, King Louis XIII fled and Napoleon began what came to be knows as the hundred days campaign. The french were defeated at the battle of Waterloo and again Napoleon was forced to give up the throne.
