WWII Beginning to End

WWII Begins

September 1939

The Nazis invaded Poland on September 1. On September 3, Great Britain and France declared war against Germany. On September 17, the Soviet Union invaded Poland from the east. Poland surrenders and is divided between Germany and the Soviet Union.

Germany Invades Denmark and Norway

April 9, 1940 - June 9, 1940

Denmark surrendered on April 9, Norway surrendered on June 9.

Germany Attacks Western Europe

May 10, 1940 - June 22, 1940

France is attacked. Luxembourg is attacked and occupied on May 10. Belgium surrendered May 28. Italy enters war on June 10.

Germany, Italy and Japan Unite

September 27, 1940

Germany, Italy and Japan sign the Tripartite Pact, forming the Axis powers.

Others join Axis

November 1940

Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania join axis powers.

Soviet Union s Invaded

June 22, 1941 - November 1941

The Axis powers invade the Soviet Union.

Pearl Harbor is attacked

December 7, 1941 - December 13, 1941

On December 7, Japan bombs Pearl Harbor. On December 8, the US declares war on Japan, entering WWII. The Axis powers declare war on the US December 11.

Stalingrad

June 1942 - September 1942

Axis powers launch plan again Soviet Union. German troops fight into Stalingrad and take over the Caucasus after getting the Crimean Peninsula.

Normandy

June 1944 - July 1944

On June 6, US forces successfully land on the beaches of Normandy in France, being a second from against the Germans. On July 25, US forces break out of Normandy and head towards Paris.

Battle of the Bulge

December 1944

Germans launch offense in west, the Battle of the Bulge, hoping to re-conquer Belgium and split the Allied forces. Germans retreat by January 1.

Germany Surrenders

May 7, 1945 - May 9, 1945

Germany surrenders to western Allies May 7 and to the Soviets on May 9.

US Bombs Japan

August 1945

The US drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Japan Surrenders

September 2, 1945

Japan formally surrenders, ending WWII.
