Narvaez Expidition to Florida

1527 - 1528

It was led by Panfilo de Narvaez with an initial fleet of 600-650 men. On their way to Florida they encountered a hurricane, leaving about 80 men in Texas. Only a few would remain.

Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca's Journey

1527 - 1536

One of the last four survivors of Narvaez' expedition to Florida He traveled the southwest for 8 years, during which he ws a slave and a shaman to Native Americn Tribes. In 1536, he reconnected with Spanish fleets.

Fray Marcos de Niza and the 7 cities of Cibola

1539

Rumors of cities made in Gold were sped throughout Spain, so Governor Coronado sent Niza on a quest. Supposedly, Niza saw the Gold City and told Coronado.

Francisco Vasquez de Coronado's exploration

1540 - 1542

Coronado put together a fleet of 350 men and 800 slaves. Overtime he gave up because he could not find the city of gold.

Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo Voyage

Sent from Spain to look fo "trade" opportunities. Turned into a big expedition.

Sir Francis Drake attack Spanish

1572 - 1573

Spanish intially attacked him, he vowed his revenge, and he eventually plotted to attack the Spanish at a main port (peru) and steal all their treasure. Took control of town for a year until his health cuased the fleet to flee.

Juan de Onate settles in New Mexico

1595 - 1598

King Phillip ordered him to take over the land, Onate became first govenor of New Mexico.

Father Kino founded the mission of San Xavier, and founded Arizona in 1692.
