Queen Elizabeth's reign started in 1558 and ended in 1603. She is well known for being a virgin when she died. She also left a huge debt for her successor.
King James I
1603 - 1625
King James I was the King of Scotland and England, although Scotland and England were not united until 1707. King James inherited the unsettled issues of Elizebeth's reign, his worst struggles with Parliment were over money.
1625 - 1649
Charles was King James' I son. Charles always needed more money during his rule because he was always at war with both Spain and France.
1649 - 1658
Cromwell abolished the monarchy and the House of Lords. He and his associate John Lambert, drafted a constitution, the first written constitutionof any modern European state. However, Cromwell tore up the document and became a military dictator.
1660 - 1685
When prince Charles entered London, crowds shouted and bells rang. Charles restored the Monarchy during his rule and it was called the Restoration.
This law gave evey prisoner the right to obtain a writ or document ordering that the prisoner be brought before a judge to specify the charge against the prisoner.
1685 - 1688
James II had a daughter named Mary who was a protetstant. King James soon offened his subjects by displaying his catholicism. Violating english law he apointed several ctholics to high office.
No british monarch could rule without the consent of parliment. Parliment could not rule without the consent of the monarch.
William and Mary
1688 - 1694
Seven members of parliment invited William and Mary to overthrow James II
for the sake of protestantism. At their corenation William and Mary vowed to recognize Parliment as their partner in governing. They consented to these and other limits on their royal power.
Bill of Rights
This document listed many things a ruler can not do. No suspending of parliments laws. No penilaty for a citizen who petitions the king about grievences.
