This zeitgeist focuses on the rights of sexual minorities, starting originally with gay and lesbian people, then expanding the focus to bisexuality, asexuality, pansexuality, transgender and other gender minorities. Decriminalization of homosexual acts began in some states in the 1960s, but it was not until 2003 that the US Supreme Court decriminalized it nationally in Lawrence v Texas. In terms of psychology, discrimination against sexual minorities was reflected in earlier version of the DSM. Even today, a somewhat controversial "gender dysphoria" diagnosis. In terms of psychology, LGBTQIA populations struggle with higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation, so competency in understanding and treating the unique needs of these population(s) is important.
