This act implemented yearly academic assessments and made schools accountable for their progress. This is where schools really started to become test focused. I graduated from high school this year in NH, so it didn’t affect me that much. As an educator, though, this has a great effect on my teaching as I am held accountable to the progress my students make in school, and that progress is measured through standardized testing. Again, the testing models have many shortcomings, even more so with ELLs, in how they are administered and assessed.
There isn’t really a way around having students take standardized tests. My hope is that I can teach them how to navigate these tests effectively, introducing key vocab throughout the year that they will see on the test to hopefully help them better understand what is required of them. Additionally, I hope to instill skills throughout the year that will help them succeed as well such as critical thinking, analysis, comparing and contrasting, and prediction.
