all living aboriginal Australians descend from a single founding population that arrived about 50,000 years ag. There is considerable discussion among archeologists as to the route taken by the first migrants to Australia, widely taken to be the ancestors of modern aboriginals.

Captain cook 'discovered' the south east coast of Australia, landing in botany bay. On 22 August 1770, he claimed the whole of the east coast of Australia at possession island, naming eastern Australia, New South Wales.
arrival of first fleet, captained by arthur phillip
the first fleet of 11 ships left Portsmouth in 1787 with more than 1480 men, women and children aboard. Although most were British, there were also Africans, Americans and French convicts. After 3 months the first fleet arrived at botany bay on 24th January 1788.
between 1788-1868, more than 162,000 convicts were transported to Australia, 7000 arrived in 1833 alone. these convicts were transported as punishments for crime.
arrival of greeks
the first known Greeks arrived in 1829. they were seven sailors, convicted of piracy by a British naval court, and were sentenced to transportation to NSW
victorian gold rush
this was the first gold rush in Australia. it started when prospector Edward Hargraves claimed to have discovered payable gold near orange, at a sight he called Ophir.
arrival of chinese
news of goldrush in Australia had reached southern china. it is thought that approximately 7000 Chinese people migrated to Australia and work at the Araluen gold fields, NSW.
this was caused by a disagreement over what gold miners felt were unfair laws. miners were unable to claim the land that they worked on. they swore to fight together against police and military.

the first Indians arrived in Australia with the British settlers who had been living in India. from 1860's Indians, most of then Sikh, worked as merchants, industrialists and businessmen to operate throughout outback Australia, as 'pioneers of the inland'
