Lillian and William Golbitis refused to recite the pledge and were expelled because of it. It was against their religion to say the pledge because God was their supreme ruler. The court decided the kids had to do it at the school.
West Virginia Board of Education v. Barnette

State required all teachers and students to salute the flag. The children in a family of Jehovahs witnesses refused to salute the flag and were sent home. They were threatened with reform schools for criminally active children. The court held that compelling public school children to salute was unconstitutional.
