Reconstruction Acts of 1867

series of statutes meant to help reconstruct the United States after the devastation of the Civil War. These statutes where made to :

  • give voting rights to all men in Confederate states

-have all former Confederate states ratify the 14th amendment

  • require congressional approval for new state constitutions

Also known as the Compromise of 1877. The result of the compromise was that Rutherford B. Hayes was declared the US President following the election of 1876 in exchange for the Republicans withdrawing their troops from the Southern States.
