The Red scare was the fear of communism across Europe and the United States. It was scary because democratic governments were vulnerable to the communist revolution as the influence of communism spread across Europe.
Communist Revolution in China
Approx. 1946 - October 1, 1949
The Communist revolution in China was lead by Mao Zedong. Mao targeted the views of the peasants and said that they would be better off in the new communist system. This caused a revolution to overthrow the corrupt dictator Chaing Kai Shek.
June 25, 1950 - July 27, 1953
This was a short was between democracy and the fear of communism. The USSR and China sided on the side of the North Koreans. The US sided on the side of the South Koreans. The US wanted to protect the democracy in Korea and the USSR was looking to expand its influence. This war effectively worsened relations between China and the US because they sided against the US.

U2 spy plane shot down
May 1, 1960
The spy planes were supposed to fly over Russia from high altitude so that they wouldn't be seen or shot down. The planes were equipped with new camera technology and then they were supposed to fly over military facilities and spy on the soviets during the cold war. However one was shot down and the pilot didn't kill himself and was captured. This was a huge hassle and time of tight tensions between the US and Soviets.

During the Cold War the Soviets moved their nuclear missiles to Cuba because they were allies at the time. They did this so that their nuclear missiles would be in range of millions of US citizens and could cause mass destruction. This was a huge problem for the US government and caused mass panic across the government.
