My parents worked multiple jobs, so my grandmother Carolina babysat us. She did not speak English, so she sang to us in Spanish instead of reading to us. I am unsure if she read to us in Spanish. I could understand Spanish fluently till the age of 5 (Pearson & Stephens, 1992), I have since lost it. Goodman discussed that there are multiple roads to literacy, I believe this was one of mine. During such a sensitive time in my life I developed an understanding of oral language and culture through my grandmother's songs, thus supporting my literacy development (Braunger & Lewis, 2006).
