Xenophobia is the fear of immigrant from foreign countries. During the time of WWI xenophobia was common towards foreigners. Canadians were quite suspicious of foreigners and thought of them having malicious intent. This was very much so for people from the countries included in the Triple Alliance (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy). These immigrants often had troubles from this that included a decreased chance of getting a job. It was even harder for immigrants when public opinion made the government sway they implemented a requirement for immigrants to pass an English literacy test. From this public opinion Canada even closed its borders to Mennonites, Doukhobors and Hutterites.
