This is important because it was the last victory the Indians would have. The Americans pushed the Indians off of their Black Hills because of the discovery of gold. In the mining, American soldiers were sent to make sure there was no trouble. Despite his orders to wait, General Custer attacked the Indians led by Sitting Bull. Unaware of their large number of troops, the Americans were utterly defeated, with only one half-Indian being able to leave alive. This was the spark Americans needed to justify wiping out the Indians, and because of this even more American troops came back, large and powerful.
