Tensions between Austria-Hungary and Serbia dramatically Increases

July 28-August 4: Austria declares war on Serbia.

Russia, France, Germany, and UK are in the war within a week.

September 5: Battle of the Marne on the Marne river outside of Paris.

Halted the German Schlieffen  plan. the Germans were forced to retreat. At this point, many trenches were dug.

February 4: Germans make U-boat blockade.

They target any vessel that goes into any enemy port. This made neutral nations angry.

April 22: Second Battle of Ypres.

Only German offensive in 1915. First use of poison gas.

April 25: Battle of Gallipoli.

Allies attack turkey in an attempt to get Russia supplies. Allies failed to do so.

May 7: RMA Lusitania is sunk by German u-boats.

It outrages the British public as it was an ocean liner. Italy also joins war on the side of the allies.

February 21: The siege of Verdun begins.

It was believed by the Germans that if Verdun was taken, it would be a major blow to the morality of France as it was an important symbol.

May 4: Germany promises in the Sussex pledge to stop USW.

They then had to warn merchant ships before they torpedoed them. they did this after they were threatened by the united states.

May 31: The battle of Jutland begins.

This was the most major naval battle of the war. The German fleet was effectively defeated by the royal navy. The German fleet then kept their distance from the northern waters as the royal fleet's dominance was established.

July 1: The battle of the Somme.

July 1, 1916

Major offensive by the British to relieve the forces at Verdun. considered to be the bloodiest day in the history of the British army. the British were slaughtered by the Germans. The tank was introduced.

February 1: The Sussex pledge is revoked.

February 1, 1917

Unrestricted submarine warfare continues again.

April 6: The US declares war on Germany.

December 17: The Russians sign an armistice with Germany.

The Russians sign an armistice with Germany and pull out of the war due to their recent revolution. This made the war a single front war.

January 8: US President Woodrow Wilson gives his 14 points speech.

January 8, 1918

US President Woodrow Wilson offers Europe "peace without victory" in his fourteen points speech, it is declined by both sides.

March 21: the Germans launch all forces in their massive spring offensive.

March 21, 1918

They are stopped once again outside Paris at the Marne river.

November 11: an armistice ending the war is signed.

January 19: the Paris peace conference is held.

January 19, 1919

The Paris Peace Conference is held with the intention of ending war in Europe. It is unsuccessful. It was lead by America, Italy, France, and Great Britain.
