Mr. Grande's Big History

From the Neolithic Revolution to Sir Duke Grande III

Big History

Neolithic Revolution

8000 BCE - 5000 BCE

Period of time when nomadic hunter-gatherers settled in river valleys to domesticate plants and animals. They produced surplus food and began to trade, develop hierarchy, produce a soldier class which engaged in warfare and built empires. The steady food source resulted in longer lives.

Axial Age

800 BCE - 200 BCE

Period when mature societies were more urban and people began to consider questions about their existence, like "what happens after I die?" This led to a growing concern about morality. It's the period of time when Hinduism and Judaism reform--the priest caste become less important, and the role that average people have to follow ethical rules is more important. The Torah--a moral document is written. Dharma in Hinduism is stressed. Buddhism develops the 8-fold path. Moral philosophies in China develop--Daosim, Confucianism and Legalism. Ancient Greek philosophy develops ideas about democracy and a good society. The ground work for Christianity, and later Islam, is set.
