Paul David "Bono" Hewson is born

May 10, 1960

Paul Hewson is born in Dublin, Ireland to parents Brendan Robert & Iris Elizabeth.

Paul Hewson becomes 'Bona Vox' or 'Bono'


Paul Hewson officially names himself 'Bona Vox' or 'Bono' for short, after a hearing aid store in Dublin. 'Bona Vox' meant 'good voice' in Latin.

First meeting as a band


Larry Mullen Jr. arranges a meeting for whoever is interested in joining his band. Bono, Adam Clayton, David Evans, Dik Evans & two of Larry's friends respond and attend.

The band officially becomes U2

March 20, 1978

Playing their last concert as 'The Hype' and with The Edge's brother Dik, they officially become U2, with Dik's departure.

Minor milestones

Paul starts schooling in The Inkwell

1968 - 1972

A young Paul Hewson begins his education at The Inkwell, a Protestant Church of Ireland junior school.

Paul continues his studies at St. Patrick's

September 1971

Paul Hewson continues studying in St. Patrick's. He soon departed, being asked to leave, as he was unhappy there, and so were the teachers from his presence.

Paul enrolls at Mount Temple, after an unsucessful stint in St. Patrick's.

1972 - 1978

Paul transfers to Mt. Temple Comprehensive School, where he soon met the members of U2, and his future wife.

Paul's mom passes away due to a brain hemorrhage


Paul's mom tragically passes away after a brain hemorrhage at her own father's funeral. She died 4 days after her collapse during the funeral.

U2's international breakthrough

1979 - 1981

U2 finally breakthrough in the United States and beyond, after 5 years of hard work. They quickly earn a spot in the show business, and rise to prominence.

Paul marries his girlfriend of 6 years, Alison Stewart

August 21, 1982

Paul is to wed Ali, his girlfriend of 6 years, in 1982. He was 22 while she was 21.

U2 and Bob Geldof, all active humanitarians collaborate for the first time


U2 and Bob Geldof collaborate for the very first time, among many other collaborations.

Daughter Jordan is born

May 10, 1989

Bono & his wife Ali's daughter Jordan is born on May 10, 1989.

Daughter Memphis Eve is born

July 7, 1991

Bono & his wife Ali's daughter Memphis Eve is born on July 7, 1991.

Bono co-founds the ONE Campaign

Bono and the rest of U2 co-founds the ONE Campaign in 2004, an organization fighting to end poverty & slavery.

Bono meets with Lula Da Silva, the president of Brazil, sometime in 2005.

(Product)RED is started, by U2 & Bobby Shriver


(Product)RED, an organization of products ranging from iPods to water bottles to clothes to coffee. The funds go to the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis & Malaria. In 2006, it was started, by U2 & Bobby Shriver.

Bono wins the Man of Peace Prize

December 11, 2008

Following an honour from the NBC Nightly News, Bono receives the Man of Peace Prize, awarded by several other Nobel Peace Prize victors of the past.

'Boy' is released

October 12, 1980

U2's first studio album is released. It peeks at 4 on the Canadian Billboard 200, and 63 on the U.S. Billboard 200.

'The Joshua Tree', U2's first #1 U.S. album is released

March 9, 1987

Their breakthrough album, The Joshua Tree, is released. Arguably their biggest song up to date, With or Without You, is featured on the album.

'Pop', U2's biggest album up to date is released

March 4, 1997

U2 releases 'Pop', and hits #1 in 35 different countries. Despite the positive reviews, sales were low compared to previous albums.

Charity & music events

Band Aid Charity Event in Ethiopia

1985 - 1986

Bono volunteers at the Band Aid Charity Event along with Adam Clayton, in Ethiopia, after the 1984-85 famine. Soon after this, they collaborate with Bob Geldof for the first time among many collaborations. There, they created the single "Do They Know It's Christmas?/Feed The World" with different artists.

Amnesty's Conspiracy of Hope Tour in U.S.A.
