Mexican War ends

U.S. gets the land that is now California, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico, and Arizona. Some controversy on boundaries.

War between the U.S. and Mexico nearly breaks out

1853

Controversy on boundaries became so heated war nearly broke out between the U.S. and Mexico, but was stopped when President Franklin Pierce sent James Gadsen to offer to purchase more land. Although offer was denied it broke the tension.

Copper is discovered in Arizona

1854

Fort Buchanan is established

1856

It's purpose was to protect settlers and miners in the mountains S. of Tucson.

Fort Mohave is established

1859

Built on Colorado river to shelter immigrants.

AZ Gold rush

1860

Gila river, Colorado River, and Bradshaw mountains.

Civil War begins

Confederacy dominates AZ land

Territory of Arizona is established

Capital and Counties

1864

Prescott becomes the capital of the Arizona Territory. The four counties Yuma, Yavapai, Pima, and Mohave are established.

Camp Grant Massacre

118 Apache people (men, women, and children) were murdered within the short span of 30 minutes.

Arizona becomes a state
