From 1910 to 1945, Japan ruled Korea as a colony.

1914

Leads to WW1 in Europe. The United States remains neutral.His wife was killed.

1,200 people, including 128 American citizens die when a German submarine sinks.

1916

The war helped President Wilson win for reelection.

President Wilson peace

1916

President Wilson tried to bring both sides to peace talks. He believed that the United States, as a neutral nation, could lead warring nations to a fair peace, a "peace without victory". But Wilson's peace effort failed.' Wilson knew that the United States might be drawn into the war.

Raising an Army

1917

Before they could even begin fighting, United States needed to enlarge its armed forces, On May 18, 1917, Congress passed the Selective Service Act. It required all men from the ages of 21 to 30 to register for the military draft. In the next 18 months, 4 million men and women joined the armed forces.

War ended

1917

when the war had ended, more than 2 million soldiers came home and began to look for jobs. At the same time, factories stopped turning out war materials. The result was a sharp recession, or economic slump.

End of war

1918

An armistice ends the war on November 11.

The Senate rejects the Treaty of Versailles.

1920

The army became a great educator. It taught millions of young Americans not only to fight but to learn how to read, how to eat nutritious meals, and how to care for their daily healthy needs. By 1920, nearly 75% of all school-aged children were enrolled to school.

Peace Treaty

The United States signs a peace treaty with Germany.

By 1948 the United States, Britain, and France to reunite their zones. Stalin had opposed that plan.

In September of 1949 the United States learned that the Soviet Union had tested an atomic bomb.

In September 1959, the Soviet leader, Nikita Krushchev, arrived in New York to address the United Nations.

In 1961, President John F. Kennedy approved a plan for Cuban exiles to overthrow Castro.
