City States of Sumer

5000 B.C. - 4000 B.C.

Sumer gets divided into about a dozen city states. They were the first ones ever erected.

Sargon of Akkad formed empire

2334 B.C.

Conquered the Sumerian city states and founded the Dynasty of Akkad. He took over lots of land as the emperor.

Hammurabi's Code

1780 B.C.

Babylonian law code chisseld into stone. It contains lots of laws aplieing to wages or punishments for certain crimes.

Athens formed direct democracy

550 B.C.

Known as one of the first known strong democracies. It survived whale other democracies crumbled around it. Their views are used in everyday life.

Roman Republic Formed

509 B.C.

Began as a republic by overthrowing the roman monarchy. Two consuls would be elected annually by the public. Based on the beliefs of separation of powers and checks and balances.

Roman Empire Formed

27 B.C.

Had an autocratic form of government. At first everything was peaceful but then everything went bad.

Feudalism Began in Europe

800 - 1400

Was to structure society around relationships derived from the holding of land in exchange for work.

English Civil War

1642 - 1649

People were scared that by joining lands the old English traditions would be lost. By a man trying to bring peace to a land, war was brought instead.

Rise of Absolute Monarchies

1650 - 1716

An absolute monachy is when the monarch has unlimited, unrestrained power. The absolute monarchies started in France and spread over Europe.

American Revolution

1775 - 1783

The 13 colonies of America wanted independence from great britain. After many battles America was too the colonies and they were ready to start anew. They started with a confederacy but found they needed to make a constitution.
