They lived in the southeastern part of the United States.

1400 - Present

The process of trading cotton for other valuables from other countries.

Triangle Slave Trade

1500 - 1800

The English took weapons and supplies to Africa in return for slaves. They brought the slaves to America.


1500 - 1700

Mercantilism is when you have to give all of your good to the mother country. The mother Country gets to set the prices so they get very rich.

San Miguel de Guadeloupe

1526 - 1527

San Miguel de Guadeloupe was the first European settler in Guadalupe. The settlement failed because of the harsh winter.

13 English Colonies

1607 - 1732

The 13 English Colonies were the first successful English settlement in the new world. The first settlement was Jamestown Virginia. The last settlement was in Georgia.

Plantation System

1660 - 1800

In the plantation system each person would get a certain amount of land and he or she would get people to work for him/her.

Proprietary Colony

1660 - 1690

Colonies used to make money to pay back loans and buy land and supplies.

Abolitionist Movement

1700 - 1899

A movement to end slavery. It became very popular in the north during the American Revolution.

Slave Codes

1712 - 1865

Slave Codes are laws that limited slaves rights. The master had complete control over his her slaves.

Yamasse War

1715 - 1717

The Yamasee Indians fought against the British with the Cherokee and other tribes.

Royal Colonies

1729 - 1776

Royal Colonies was British colonies until 1776. They gave the British money for weapons and other stuff.

Stono Rebellion


A near successful slave uprising. they met near the stono river broke into a store stole guns gunpowder and ammunition. The whites won and this led to stricter slave codes.

French and Indian War

1754 - 1763

A war between the French and British. The Indians were on the French side.

Cherokee War

1758 - 1761

The Cherokee War was a battle between the Cherokee and the British over land.

Sons of Liberty

1760 - 1776

A group of people who did things to end the taxes of Britain. They did the Boston tea party.

Rice and Indigo Trade

1763 - 1783

South Carolina traded rice and indigo to Britain.

Stamp Act


Parliament put taxes on stamps.

Regulator Movement

1765 - 1771

An uprising in North and South Carolina. It lasted six years. They went against the British.

Sugar Act


An act put in place by Parliament that put taxes on anything important with sugar in it.

Tea Act

may 10 1773 - 1861

An act placed on tea by parliament. Colonists had to pay a tax to buy British tea.

Revolutionary War

1775 - 1783

A war between the colonists and the Americans. The Americans won.

South Carolina Constitution of 1776

1776 - current day

Is South Carolina's constitution. It was created before the real United States Constitution.

Declaration of Independence

july 4, 1776

The day America declared freedom from Britain.

One of the major American victories of the revolutionary war.

Articles of Confederation

1781 - 1789

Was the original constitution. It did not work so another, more successful constitution was created.

The last major engagement in South Carolina.

The Commerce Compromise


The Commerce Compromise is when The Constitution allows the federal government to tax imports but not exports.

The Great Compromise is when congress decided how the president would be voted for.

Cotton Gin


The Cotton Gin was created to make the life of slaves easier by picking seeds out for them. It actually rebooted slavery in the south.

Embargo act

1807 - 1809

England stopped trade with all other countries, they captured any ships that came to England.

War of 1812

1812 - 1815

A war between Great Britain and the USA over territory.

Denmark Vessey Plot


A plot for slaves to rebel and seize Charleston. It failed because someone ratted him out.

Nullification Crisis

1832 - 1833

A series of tariffs that made south Carolina's economy plummet.

kansas Nebraska Act


Created the territories of Kansas and Nebraska to have one side pro-slavery and one side anti-slavery.

Dredd Scott Decision


A court case between Dredd Scott and Stanford.

Election of 1860


The election between John C. Breckenridge and Abraham Lincoln. Becomes the start of the Civil War. Abe Lincoln wins.

A war between the confederate states and the union. It occurred in the United States.

A civil war general. He believed in total war. He Is responsible for the destruction of most of the South. He destroyed everything in his path.

Robert smalls freed himself family and friends to Charleston harbor.

Lincoln was killed by John Wilkes Booth in fords theater.
