South Carolina history timeline


Eastern woodland Indians

800 b.c. - 800 a.d.

They lived from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mississippi River. Also they were good hunter gatherers.

Triangle slave trade

1481 - 1865

Slave trade was between America, Africa and Europe. Many of the slaves would die or get very sick on the ride there.


1500 - 1800

An economic system that dominated the European trading. It happened in the 16th through 18th century.

San Miguel de Gualdape

1526 - 1527

It's near where Georgetown is today. The settlement fail due to disease.

13 English colonies

1607 - 1732

They were the original states founded by English settlers. Grew into America like it is today.

Proprietary colony

1660 - 1690

This is a colony given to a proprietor to govern.

plantation system

1700 - 1800

this is the system for a plantation. for like slaves and when and what they have to do.

slave codes

1712 - 1863

these are codes that put limits on slaves so that they cant run away or they will be punished.

Yemassee war

1715 - 1717

The settlers made the yemassee tribe to move north into what is today South Carolina.

Royal colony

1732 - 1752

A colony administered by a royal governor. Example New York.

Stono rebellion

1739 - 1740

20 slaves broke into a store and stole guns and gunpowder. It was one of the largest rebellions.

French and Indian war

1754 - 1763

In the French and Indian war it was a battle between America and france. We had Indians as sour allies and so did they.

Rice and indigo trade

1763 - 1783

Indigo is one of the oldest dyes. Rice was a British crop which played a big role in slavery.

Regulator Movement

1764 - 1771

Two groups one in s.c and one in n.c. They tried to effect governmental changes.

Sugar act

1764 - 1765

The government put tax on sugar and molasses. People had to pay six cents per gallon of molasses.

sons of liberty

1765 - 1766

cotton gin

1765 - 1825

this was invented by Eli Whitney. he was a pioneer of the cotton production.

Tea act

1773 - 1774

This bill was supposed to bail out the British east India company.

revolutionary war

1775 - 1783

this was a war between Brittan and America. america ended up winning this war.

Stamp act

1775 - 1776

This was when the government put taxes on paper product. His includes new paper, paper stamps.

declaration of independence

1776 - 1783

the declaration of independence gave america freedom from england. this said that we are our own country and britan cant tell us what to do.

Cherokee war

1776 - 1777

Known as the second cherokee war.

battle of kings moutain

1780 - 1781

both armies were the same size. the winner of this war were the american revolutionaries.

battle of camden

1780 - 1781

the british won this battle. also the british had a smaller army in this battle than the americans.

battle of cowpens

1781 - 1782

this was the turning point of the war.

battle of eutaw springs

1781 - 1782

this was one of the bloodiest battles in the war.

articles of confederation

1781 - 1789

the ratification of the articles of confederation by all 13 states didn't happen until 1781. the articles of confederation was made in1777.

1787 - 1788

this was an agreement between northern and southern states.

commerce compromise

1787 - 1788

this compromise was so the federal government could regulate commerce.

great compromise

1787 - 1788

the constitution is a list of different principles saying what people can and cant do.

embargo act

1807 - 1808

this was american laws saying that american ships cant engage in foreign trade.

war of 1812

1812 - 1814

this war was between united states and the united kingdom.

william t. sherman

1820 - 1891

william t sherman was a part of the union army. when he was promoted he captured atlanta in one of his battles.

denmark vessy plot

1822 - 1823

this was a plot created by vesey for slaves to revolt against their masters.

Abolitionist Movement

1830 - 1870

this movement was to make slave owners be against slavery.

Nullification Controversy

1832 - 1833

this was during the time when president jackson was president.

robert smalls

1839 - 1915

robert small was a slave when he was born and he taught himself to read. he escaped by sailing him and his family to freedom.

kansas/nebraska act

1854 - 1855

this act divided west Missouri into two separate territories.

dred scott decision

1857 - 1858

this was when they said that free and slaved blacks could never be citizens of america.

election of 1860

1860 - 1861

this was when abraham lincoln was elected president.


1860 - 1861

this helped the outbreak of the civil war.

ft sumter

1860 - 2013

this base was the start of the civil war. it was made in 1860 but the plans for it were drawn in 1827.

creation of the Confederate States of America

1861 - 1862

this is when the confederate states were created.

cival war

1861 - 1865

the civil war was when the north and south went to war over many things including slavery.

port royal

1861 - 1862

there was a battle in port royal when abraham lincoln was president. president lincoln made a blockade in all the ports sop no one could come in.


1861 - 1865

the secession led to the civil war. it was the most serious secession movement in the south.

total war

1864 - 1865

total war is when nothing matters accept winning and nothing gets in there way and they destroy the civil war it went on for 2 weeks.

lincolns assassination

1865 - 1866

this is when john wilks booth shot Lincoln in the back of the head at the theater.
