National Child Labor Committee formed

NCLC formed by Florence Kelley, a lawyer, in 1902. Kelley was a leader in the anti child labor movement. She helped convince the state of Illinois to ban child labor. Other states soon followed.

Pure Food And Drug Act

1906 - 1938

One of the federal government's first efforts to impose regulation on the products the punblic ingested.
Sometimes called the Wiley Act after Harvey Washington Wiley, the director of the Bureau of Chemistry, who had long campaigned for food and drug regulation.

Goverment forms U.S. Children's Bureau

The U.S. Children's Bureau was created due to the successful lobbying from the National Child Labor Committee. The new agency examined any issue that affected the health and welfare of children. This agency stiill works to protect children today.

The Pure Food and Drug Act made an attempt to outlaw Coca-Cola because of its excessive caffeine. In the case "United States v. Forty Barrels and Twenty Kegs of Coca-Cola", the judge found that Coca-Cola had a right to use caffeine
