Chinese Civil War

1927 - 1950

Fugui to performed puppet shows while in the custody of a KMT (Kuomintang) army.

War of Liberation

1946 - 1952

The Mao Era

1948 - 1976

Mao Zedong served as the first Chairman of the Communist Party of China.

Great Leap Forward

1958 - 1961

A Five-Year Plan ainmed to improve the economy through industrialization. In "Huo Zhe", Fugui's family had to donate much of their scrap iron for mkaing weapons to fight against Taiwan. When Fengxia needed to go to the hospital to have her baby, the hospital was being run by students because all doctors were sent to do hard labor.

Peoples' Communes


Food was provided by the government in the communes. Fugui and his family are shown receiving meals at their town's commune.

Three Bitter Years

1959 - 1961

Also known as the Great Chinese Famine, this was period of drought, poor weather and widespread famine.

The Little Red Book


"Quotations from Chairman Mao Zedong" was widely distributed during the Cultural Revolution.

Cultural Revolution

1966 - 1976

This was started by Chairman Mao enforcing communism by the removal of capitalist, traditional and cultural aspects from Chinese Society.

Hua Guofeng

1976 - 1981

After Mao Zedong's death, Hua Guofeng took his place as the new Chairman of the Communist Party of China.
