Another attempt to gain territory but Prussia emerged from the war as the chief military power of the Continent.

Wars of Napoleon I

1793 - 1795

Defeated by the French, Prussia withdrew and signed the Treaty of Basel in 1795

Twin battles of Jena and Auerstedt

1806 - 1807

French's armies were crushed by Napoleon, Prussia had to sign the Treaty of Tilsit which in result took away lands W of the Elbe and most of its share of Poland. Then Prussia became a virtual dependency of France.

Political and Economic system renewed

1808 - 1809

Karl vom und zum Stein, Karl August von Hardenberg, and Wilhelm von Humboldt, helped transform Prussia into a progressive state. Serfdom and nobiliary privileges were abolished. This causes the lay down of the groundwork for an exemplary system of universal education.
