LSD was first synthesized by Albert Hoffman, of Sandoz Laboratories in Switzerland as part of a research program seeking medically useful derivatives of ergot alkaloids.

Introduction as a Psychiactric Drug

1946

LSD was introduced as a psychiatric drug by Sandoz Laboratories.

MK ULTRA

1958

The clandestine operation codenamed MK ULTRA was initiated by America’s Central Intelligence Agency.

Classification: Investigational New Drug

1963

America’s Food and Drug Administration classified LSD as an Investigational New Drug, placing restriction on research.

ILLEGAL

1968

Possession of LSD was made illegal in the United States.

Controlled Substances Act

1970

The Controlled Substances Act was passed, defining a scheduling system for drugs. LSD was placed in the most restrictive schedule- Schedule I

The Last FDA Approved Study

1980

The last FDA approved study of LSD in patients ended.

1993

LSD is no longer legally approved and regulated for psychiatric use in Switzerland.
