Fillmore Steps Into Office

Zachary Taylor dies because of eating bad cherries and milk, so Millard Fillmore goes into office and becomes the 13th president of the United States.

Levi Strauss makes his first pair of blue jeans in 1850

Maine bans Alchohol

1851

The Maine Law was passed in 1851, which was the first implements of developing a temperance movement in the United States.

Uncle Tom's Cabin

1852

Harriet Beecher Stowe publishes a controversial book on slavery that really depicts the torturous aspect of slavery where families were ripped apart just to be sold to different people. It made the north hate slavery even more, as well as being a leading factor to the Civil War.

Kansas-Nebraska Act

May 30, 1854

The Kansas-Nebraska Act, which allowed people in the territories of Kansas and Nebraska to determine whether slavery would be in their territories or not through popular sovereignty, was passed on May 30, 1854. It repealed the Missouri Compromise, which in turn made slavery prohibited north of the 36 30 line.
