The Meeting of the Estates General

May 5, 1789

The French had 1-3 estates that determined people's legal rights and status. The first estate had a 1% population, the second had a 2% population, and finally the third had an 97% population.The first estate was called the Roman Catholic Clergy.!

The Tennis Court Oath

June 20, 1789

King Louis XVI called the general estates to a meet in 1789, the goal was to raise taxes to pay off debt. The National Assembly was to demand more power, vow a fair constitution and called t the Tennis Court Oath.

The storming of the Bastille

July 14, 1789

It started by the King trying to stop the National Assembly which had lead to a mob taking over Bastille. They did it to steal weapons. The greatest fear was the peasants taking over and revolting, also attacking landlords.

The Reign of Terror

September 5, 1793

People were assumed of being traitors. Therefore they were beheaded. In all 40,000 people were suspected of being traitors so all of them had been beheaded.

The Rise of Napoleon and Creation of an Empire

November 1799

Napoleon was a general who had defeated Austria and Northern Italy. The popularity that he had overthrew the government. He was a dictator but proclaimed as a republic.

Napoleon's Empire Collapses

April 1814

In 1814 he crowns himself emperor and he was defeated. He was exiled to islands of Helena.

The Congress of Vienna


Allies redrew a map of Europe, restored the kings who had ruled before Napoleon. It was then peace in Europe.
