Beverly is born

1916

born as Beverly Bunn on a small farm in Yamhill, on April 12, 1916.

Her family moves

1922

the Bunn family leaves it's farm in Yamhill, to live in Portland, Oregon.

Beverly starts to love reading.

1923

in the second grade, seven-year old Beverly begins her life-long love of books.

She starts to think about writing

1924

the librarian at her school encourages eight year old Beverly to have a career in writing, seeing how much she loved books.

Beverly goes to college

1934 - 1940

She moved to Ontario, California to attend Chaffey college, where she got an associate of arts degree. she then went to university of California, where she graduated with a BA in English in 1938, and then went to the School of Librarianship at the University of Washington, and got a degree in Library Science in 1939.

Beverly gets married

1940

Beverly Bunn becomes Beverly Cleary when she marries Clarence Cleary.They eloped, because her Presbyterian parents did not approve of her getting married to a catholic, before or after the marriage.

Her first book is published

1950

Her first book, 'Henry Huggins', was published in 1950, and is a book about a boy, his dog, and his friends.

Beezus and Ramona is published

1955

the book many people know her for, Beezus and Ramona, is published the same year her kids are born

The Clearys have kids.

in 1955, the clearys have two kids, Marianne Elizabeth, and Malcolm James, who were twins

Newbery honors

1978

Ramona and her Father is awarded Newbery Honors in 1978.

She gets a Newbery medal award.

1984

her book Dear Mr. Henshaw is awarded a Newbery Medal award in 1984.
