Bethany Hamilton was born in Lihue, Hawaii.
It took many years to learn how to surf before she could enter competitons.
Her parents Tom and Cheri Hamilton taught her to surf when she was a little girl.
She had her first surfing competition in 1998 when she was 8 years old.
She had her first surf sponsorship from Rip Curl and Tim Carroll Surfboards a year after her first surf competiton.
Bethany continued getting sponsorships and surfing as much as possible.
The doctors at the hospital said that she had lost over 50% of her blood and was surprised she was living.
Bethany was attacked by on shark on October 31st. The shark ripped of her arm from her finger tips to her shoulder.
As soon as she was bit by the shark her friends rushed her to the hospital.
On November 26th, 2003 Bethany got back in the water and started to surf again.
Bethany went back to her normal life of surfing
Not long after Bethany was attacked the shark that attacked her was caught by Ralph Young.
After the attack, Bethany had to learn how to surf all over with one arm. She traveled many places and had TV interviews.
On April 8th, 2011 Bethany's movie Soul Surfer hit the theaters.
