The Great Depression

1929 - 1939

This caused the choices for what women could to decline. Women "belonged in the home" with the family. If women had a job they were viewed as stealing it from a man

Radio Shows run by women

1931

Women began radio channels to challenge issues. The first radio show run by a woman was run by Kate Smith.

The National Recovery Act states no more than one family member from holding a government job, resulting in many women losing their jobs

1932

Amelia Earhart makes the first transcontinental nonstop flight by a woman

1932

Frances Perkins is sworn in as Secretary of Labor, the first woman in the U.S. cabinet.

1933

Babe Didrikson pitches a full inning for the Philadelphia Athletics (vs. the Brooklyn Dodgers)

1946 - 1964
  • Children toys represented what were believed to be the children's futures

-Girls played with dolls to pretend they were mothers

-Boys played with blocks and trucks because they were destined to build and learn

-Board games included Mystery Date, Miss Popularity, and What Shall I Be? where they chose between 6 careers: teacher, actress, nurse, model, ballet dancer, or flight attendant

  • article said: "Wives aren't born-they are made. Your daughter is born a female, but must learn to be feminine."

Jacqueline Cochran becomes the first woman to break the sound barrier.
