The birth of Siddartha

563 BCE

He was born to King Śuddhodana (father) and Queen Maya (mother). What made his birth special is that they say he was born with the ability to walk and talk.

Isolation

Approx. 536 BC - 534 BC

His father shielded him from all pain and suffering from the world so he would not know about it so he would decide to be king and not a teacher like he was destined to be.

Renunciation and Austerities

534 bc - 530 bc

He cut his hair and gave up all his gold and jewelry. He gave up food and water for long periods of fasting to gain spiritual knowledge and they said he would live on as little as one drop of water and one grain of rice a day. He became so weak he could not meditate or do important practices of the tradition.

The Four Sights

Approx. 534 bc

Siddhartha left the kingdom because he wanted to see what was outside the walls, his father arranged it so that he only saw happiness. But eventually, he saw an old man, a sick man a corpse and a monk and found out death was real. He was craving what was outside of the walls.

The Fist Sermon

531 bc - 486 bc

Siddhartha becomes known as the buddha and spread his teaching to many men through all of the caste systems including "the untouchables". His first serman was given to five monks and was called the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta.

Siddhartha discovers the Middle Way

530 BC

Instead of going to one extreme or the other with beliefs it is possible to sail the middle way and entertain the ideas of both paths and gain spiritual knowledge this way.

Enlightenment

530 BCE

Siddhartha sat beneath a large bodhi tree to meditate and decided not to move until he found what he was looking for. He was under the tree for seven days until one night he was in such a deep state of meditation he was able to see things as they really are. He is given a vision of the working of life and death and the entire cosmic universe. From this Siddhartha became enlightened and known as the buddha.

Parinirvana

486 BC

When the Buddha died he left his followers with the message, "Behold, O monks, this is my last advice to you. All compounded things in the world are changeable. They are not lasting. Work hard to gain your own salvation." He then achieved Parinirvana which is when you leave your physical body behind
