Garrett Morgan was born in Paris, Kentucky. He was the seventh of eleven children.

Moves to Cleveland

Morgan moves to Cincinnati and worked in a sewing factory

Opened Sewing Machine Repair Shop

1907

Morgan opened a shop that repaired and sold sewing machines

Open Tailoring shop

1908

Garrett owned and operated a tailoring shop that employed 32 people and manufactured dresses,suits,and coats

G.A Morgan Hair Refining co.

1909

The company provided Morgan and his wife with financial stability and gave Morgan the time and resources to work on his inventions

Patents and designs Safety Hood

1914

Morgan's hood is used to help protect soldiers from toxic gas during WW1 and reduces the risk of smoke inhalation during fires.

Rescue at Lake Erie

1916

Garrett Morgan and his brother used the safety hood he invented to rescue two people after a tunnel collapsed under Lake Erie

The Traffic Signal

1923

Morgan designed a patented a 3 color traffic device similar to the one we use today he sold the rights to General Electric

Death

1963

Morgan died July 27, 1963.He was 86 years old, and he had change the world, saving countless lives with his inventions
